Our Sweet Newman: When Your Farm Dog Is Hit by a Truck

Our Sweet Newman

Last Thursday evening was one of those nights that you never forget.

Our sweet Newman — our 3-year-old Chihuahua/Pug and resident little shadow — was hit by a truck.

It was absolutely terrifying.

Newman is one of those dogs who has somehow managed to become a part of everything around here. He’s small, but he has a personality about ten times his size. He’s been a part of our family, our home and all the chaos that comes with life here at Winterland Acres.

And last night, our hearts nearly stopped.

Our Little Guy

Newman is currently doing okay, all things considered.

He has head trauma and is ataxic, meaning he is having trouble coordinating his movements and staying steady on his feet.

He is sore, confused and definitely not feeling like himself.

But he is here.

And right now, that is what we are holding onto.

He has pain medication, lots of rest and probably more attention than he would ever admit to wanting.

We are watching him closely and taking things one day — and honestly, one hour — at a time.

Prayers For Our Boy

Anyone who has ever loved an animal knows that they aren’t just animals.

They are family.

They are there for the good days, the bad days, the long farm days and the days when you’re exhausted and covered in mud and somehow still have another dozen things to do.

Newman is our boy.

And right now, we are praying hard that his little body can heal and that the damage from the accident isn’t going to be more than he can overcome.

So if you are the praying type, please say a prayer for our sweet Newman.

Pray for healing.

Pray for his little head.

Pray that he gets his balance back and that tomorrow is a little better than today.

And honestly, just send some good thoughts his way.

One Day At A Time

Farm life is full of the highest highs and the lowest lows.

One minute you’re going about your normal evening and the next you’re holding your dog and wondering if you’re going to get to bring him home.

It’s a reminder of just how fragile these little lives are.

So tonight, we’re keeping Newman comfortable, giving him his medication, letting him rest and giving him approximately 7,000 kisses.

We are hopeful.

We are thankful he’s still here.

And we are praying for our sweet little guy.

Come on, Newman.

You’ve got some more farm life to live, buddy.

Keep fighting, sweet boy. ❤️
